Week 2... Where'd all these hills come from?

Well, I'm happy to report that I survived my 10 mile run this morning with the Team. This was my first team meeting in Peoria, and there were several other newbies there besides myself. There were also some more experienced runners, who have been training with the team for some time now. So some people were running 3 miles (the newbies), some people were running 6 miles, some people were running 10 miles, and one brave soul did 16 miles.

Why am I doing 10 miles if I'm a newbie? Because I have already been training for the Chicago Half Marathon, which is October 1. So I'm a bit ahead of the training schedule. So the coach is having me run "with" the people who are training for fall marathons for now. I say "with" in quotations because I'm actually a lot slower than they are, so I just kind of follow behind. Er.... yeah... like a mile behind! I did get to run with one woman for about 4 miles - it was nice to have someone to talk to. It really helps pass the time. And toward the end of my run, the coach ran with me for a couple miles, which was very nice of him.

I gotta hand it to the coach - he doesn't rest for a second. He probably ran 15 miles today running around to meet all the runners on their different routes and see how they were all doing.

But one thing about my run today that made it especially challenging (and is probably obvious from my post title) is the fact that it was freakin' hilly!!! It's funny how you can drive on certain streets in your car, and they seem pretty flat. But when you go to run on them, all of the sudden, they become these monstrous hills. How does that happen? Well, considering that we'll be running in that area every Saturday for the next 5 months, I guess I better get used to them thar hills. :-)

Wanna see where I ran? Here's the mapped out route. It says it's only 9.79 miles, but this software doesn't account for elevation changes. And since there were most definitely MANY elevation changes, it would have been a bit longer than 9.79 miles.

So there you have it. Until next week... happy running!
