Week 3... the midweek workout
Yesterday I went to my first mid-week team workout. The fall team has been meeting on Wednesday evenings at the high school track for quite some time now to do speed workouts and such. The winter team was invited to join them at the track, even though we weren't ready for speed workouts just yet. It still sounded like a good way to get some team motivation and get a good workout, so I decided to go.
I had to kill time between when I left work and when I was supposed to show up at the track, so I stopped at Petsmart and bought some kitty litter and picked up a few sundries at Target. Then I had to change into my workout clothes. Hmmm... this would be a challenge since I knew there was nowhere to change at the track. (Well, the coach told me there was a port-a-potty, but honestly, would YOU remove any of your clothing in a port-a-potty? Didn't think so.) So I stopped at Starbucks, because I know they have those nice, roomy single-person bathrooms. I figure I've bought enough soy vanilla lattes to earn the right to change in the bathroom.
Then it was off to the track. I arrived to find that I was the only person from the winter team to show up. There were 6 or 7 people from the fall team, plus our coach. The coach told me the fall team was doing a 5k race and that sounded like fun so I decided to play along. We were all supposed to predict our finish times, and I was having a hard time remembering how fast I was actually able to run 5k. I came up with 33:06, for some reason I thought this was my finish time for a 5k I ran a while ago.
So we all lined up at the starting line and off we went for 12.5 laps around the track. That's a lot of times to run around in a circle. I started a little fast. The coach gave us our split times for the first several laps. My 1-mile split was 9:51, which is faster than I've ever run 1 mile. Which explains why it was so hard. I kept trudging along, although I did have to slow down after that first mile because I just couldn't maintain that pace. My final finish time? 32:32. I beat my prediction by about 30 seconds - cool!
But what was even cooler was that I came home and checked my offical results from the 5k I ran a while back, and it wasn't 33:06. It was 33:54. So I beat my previous best (only) time by almost a minute and a half! Woo hoo! And that explains why I really felt like throwing up for a large portion of the run.
Next on the schedule... well, the fall team is meeting at 6am on Saturday to run 10 miles, and that's about what I wanted to do. So I'll be meeting with them. Good grief that's early! But hey, I'll get it over with early and have the rest of the day to do whatever I want (sleep). So check back this weekend for the 10-mile tale.
